Do I need an Internet connection to take courses?

An Internet connection is needed to take all your courses and perform all communications to the University and faculty. We recommend broadband access (DSL, cable or High Speed Satellite connections) but many of our students use dial-up access and are highly successful.


What kind of personal computer do I need?

The Hawthorn University online sites are optimized for PC users, using Internet Explorer. A high speed, DSL or broadband Internet connection are preferable.


Can I use a Mac computer?

We are currently converting many of our legacy files so that they work better on the Macintosh Platform. Many of our current students and instructors use a Mac, and we have people on staff with Mac expertise that can assist you with any issues that may arise. Beginning in 2009, our new learning platform will fully support both the PC and Mac platforms. In certain programs, you will need to run a PC emulation in order to use the ASHA software, which is compiled solely for the PC platform. Again, we have several students and faculty who do this successfully, and who can help you in the event that you experience difficulties. There are several work-arounds, but we have a competent staff available to help you.


Are there any other software and hardware requirements?

Diet analysis software (ESHA) optimized for windows, is part of the NC, MSHN, and MHNE programs. We strongly recommend that you license Microsoft Word. You will also need to be able to convert files to PDF format, and for this, we recommend CutePDF (for the PC) and OpenOffice (for the Mac) Both of these products are available for free.  For the clinical programs, you will need to license ESHA software. Details on the cost of this are included on our website.


Are there online instructions and support?

Students receive instructions during Orientation and on the message boards regarding computer optimization.  Technical support is available and can be contacted at support@hawthornuniversity.org


What is the average turn-around time for technical support responses?

Most questions are responded to within a few hours.  Students should not have to wait more than twenty-four (24) business hours for a response and a resolution to their problem. Not all Mac issues are resolved immediately, and no technical support solution is 100% guaranteed.  However, we have had a high level of success in the past, and our support staff is willing to work with you until your problems are resolved.


Do I have to login at a certain time or for a certain amount of time?

Students may log in at any time that is convenient for them to work on their course material.  Teleclasses are presented on Tuesday evenings at 5 p.m. Pacific Time.  All teleclasses are recorded and can be viewed at a future time if a student is unable to be present.


Does the college provide a computer?

Students are responsible to providing their own computer.
